Moderator

Angela Muvumba Sellström (PhD) is a Senior Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) and a Visiting Researcher at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University. She specializes in the United Nations Security Council, the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, and conflict-related sexual violence. For more than two decades, she has worked on human security issues in academic, policy, and diplomatic roles.

Her research has examined the role of elected members of the Security Council, Africa’s peace and security frameworks, the behavior of rebel groups in relation to wartime sexual violence, and the impact of HIV/AIDS on societal security. Grounded in interdisciplinary fieldwork and practitioner exchanges, her studies explore the intersections of gender, governance, and armed conflict, contributing to both scholarship and policy-making.

In addition to her roles at NAI and Uppsala University, Angela serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Life and Peace Institute (LPI) and is a Non-resident Fellow at the International Peace Institute (IPI). She is also a former member of the Swedish Women’s Mediation Network.

Her background includes positions at think tanks in New York, Cape Town, and Durban, as well as extensive experience in leading dialogue and mediation training and teaching at Uppsala University. With 25 years of experience, she combines field-based research with active engagement in multilateral peace and security processes, with a particular focus on armed group behavior, sexual violence prevention, and advancing the WPS agenda.
